Sometimes when I watch the stars in the dead of night,
A brother soldier, curious, would catch me, timing right.
They'd start to speak of conflict, war, politics, or home,
But they always, without fail, let the subject roam.
They'd always ask the question that inquired to my core,
"Hey, I was just wondering, why'd you go to war?"
And so it is, I'll tell you now, that you will not ask,
Why I joined the army and wore duty like a mask.

I didn't join the army for the glory or the fame,
I didn't join the army to play life just as a game.
I didn't join the army for the country's greatest pay,
Did I join the army to protect my homeland, nay.

I didn't join the army as a man in search of gore,
I didn't join the army under orders from the law.
I didn't join the army to avenge my family,
I joined the bloody army so that I'd be truly free!
